Not only is it fun to wear Halloween costumes, it’s also fun and easy to decorate your home for this spooky season of ghosts, ghouls and goblins! Celebrate the beginning of the winter season by celebrating around a cozy, comforting fire pit or decorated fireplace. Fire, after all, has been the focal point of all Halloween celebration from ancient festivals to present day celebrations.

Brief History of Halloween

Fire has always be an integral part of Halloween. It not only provides warmth for the colder temps, but a much desired source of light to ward off ghosts!

According to The History Channel, Halloween is thought to have started as an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain in Ireland. It was believed that ghosts roamed the earth on this night, so the Celtic people would light huge bonfires and wear costumes disguising themselves under animal pelts and furs in order to hide from the wandering spirits.

In the eighth century, the Catholic Church adopted November 1st as All Saints Day. The evening before was then designated as “All Hallows Eve” and then later Halloween since some of the traditions of the ancient festival of Samhain were incorporated into this now Christian holiday. Christians also embraced bonfires and wore costumes, but of saints, angels and devils.

In the United States, Halloween has been a little more light hearted, centering around children. Trick-or-treating and dressing up however they find most fun were incorporated into the ancient holiday. Halloween is actually one of our largest holidays; Americans spend an estimated $6 million per year on it, second only to Christmas!

Trick-or-Treat Fire Pit

In the Northern part of the United States, Halloween is usually a chilly night. In some states, it actually snows on Halloween night! So, be prepared to offer your little ones comfort and warmth when visiting your house for their trick-or-treat.

One way to achieve this is by having a welcoming fire pit in your driveway where you can hand out your Halloween treats. You can even make that part of the treat, by letting the little one make their own s’mores! I know when we light a fire pit on Halloween, our house it one of the favorite stops along the way; not only for the kids, but the chaperoning parents as well.

Spooky Fireplace

Don’t forget the inside of your house during Halloween. Since fire is the focal point of this traditionally pagan holiday, honor the tradition by decorating your fireplace. You can incorporate simple decorations in the form of a couple of pumpkins or go all out and transform your fireplace into a Halloween showcase.
