Inspect your decor
Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one of every 40 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death, compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home fires. Before stringing the lights, check for broken bulbs, frayed wires, bare spots and excessive kinking. Consider purchasing LED lights that don’t produce any heat and can last up to 20 years.
Don’t leave candles unattended
December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. Last December, 11 percent of home candle fires began with decorations compared to 4 percent the rest of the year. More than half (56 percent) of home candle fires occur when something that can catch on fire is too close to the candle. Don’t place candles near curtains, furniture or near the tree. Use stable holders and extinguish them before leaving the house or leaving the room for an extended period of time. Consider purchasing battery-operated candles that can look, smell and give the same feel as real candles.
Check your heat source
Winter months in the north are bitter cold. If you use portable heaters to heat your home, make sure you keep them away from flammable objects as well as the tree. Plug heaters directly into the wall, not an extension cord. If you use gas or propane to heat your home, make sure to check the pilot light the first time you need to turn it on this season. Also, if you ever smell gas, immediately turn the heater off, evacuate the home and call 911 to report a leak.
