Summer is in full swing, with camping, bonfires, and smores! While you are enjoying the nice weather, the state of Connecticut asks you to beware of the firewood regulations to protect the local trees and wood from insect infestation.

Asian Longhorned Beetle

The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) is currently the greatest threat to Connecticut trees. Originally from China, ALB was first discovered in the U.S. in New York City during 1996. In China, it kills hardwood trees but here, nationally, it prefers different maple species.

The nearest infestation to our Connecticut border is 30 miles away in Massachusetts. The Federal and State agricultural and forestry officials are trying to quarantine the beetle to a 110 square mile within Worcester and its surrounding towns. In New York there are 137 square miles under ALB regulation, including parts of New York City and Long Island.

Emerald Ash Borer

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is another insect that leads to death of a tree. It feeds of ash trees and was found in 2012 in New Haven County. It is now found throughout other counties in the state. It is too abundant in the country to be completely eradicated but there is evidence showing that the steps taken to slow down the infestation should succeed.

Movement Regulations

The major way that these insects are transported is when you move firewood. Because of this, the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) in the state of Connecticut regulates all the movement of firewood within its borders. There is a map to illustrate where you can and can’t take firewood. When transporting, you must have a document with the origin and destination of the firewood.

DEEP strongly encourages everyone to purchase firewood locally to help stop the spread of these insects. If you suspect any infestation, email the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at [email protected] or call 203-974-8474. There is also an ALB New England hotline at 866-702-9938.
